...cont'd - India Travel - Abhyanga massage & Shirodhara - part 3
The body oil eventually finished and we moved to the Shirodhara - warm oil slowly poured on the forehead. This was actually really lovely and should have been super relaxing, but my overwhelming thoughts were about what was going to happen to all the oil afterwards 😅
The oil from my head was being collected in a pot below, that was fine. But what about all the excess oil on the bed? Where will it go? Does it just get slooshed off and down the drain? What about the environmental impact? And the thoughts went on and on....🤣
After the Shirodhara, P squeezed as much excess oil out of my hair wrapped it up, and instructed me to get off the bed. I was directed towards a chair within a wooden box, (which turned out to be a one-person sauna) closed in (all bar my head), and left to cook. Again, this was not expected because I hadn't educated myself on what an Abhyanga massage entailed! 🤦‍♀️
The sauna got increasingly hotter, to the point at one stage I wondered was it still only sweat I could feel running down my body, or had my flesh started to melt off too??? 🥵🥵🥵
How hot should I let it get before calling out to P. Had anyone ever suffered severe burns in this? What temperature was it actually? When P reappeared, I asked. His response did not instill confidence..."I don't know!" What the hell P, how can you put someone in this oven and not know what temp they're cooking at 😂😂😂😂
Had it not already become clear why the pants had to come off at the beginning (the oil), it was certainly obvious now - the loin cloth was a soaking sweaty oily mess ready for the bin (oh god, I hope it was thrown in the bin and that it wasn't a reusable one I was wearing 😆🤦‍♀️🤯).
P declared me done after 30 mins in the cooker, handed me the least absorbant towel in history, advised me to remove the oil and get dressed. Remove the oil - bahahahaha! I got there eventually 🤣
Would I recommend either of the treatments???? Absolutely, both of them, without hesitation, but maybe do a little research if you're trying something new. I slept great and I feel amazing today, so all good 😆😆😆

P instructs me to sit on the chair (makes sense now why he told me I couldn't use this to hang my clothes on. Instead they were squeezed onto the window ledge). Then the oil starts. A considerable amount of oil (like enough to make me think, well we definitely won't need any more oil!) is massaged into my arms, back & head. 10 minutes later I'm told to get on the bed. The back of the loin cloth is untucked so that my beautiful ass is bare as a baby 😂
Lots more oil is poured onto my left arm & massaged for a couple of minutes. More oil on right arm, massaged. This continues on my upper, middle, and lower back, butt cheeks, both thighs & calfs. Good god, I'm at risk of sliding off the table for all the oil 🤣🤣🤣. I mean seriously, does the guy have shares in an oil production company???? 😂Then I realise the oil has some kind of "deep heat type" ingredient. My skin is starting to warm up. Remember I mentioned the butt cheek oil - well it's making it's way to more sensitive areas, and I don't know whether to laugh or panic, I mean, how burny is it going to get 😬😬😬
Thank god I was instructed to roll over, and the oil flow changed direction before any "sensitive part" burning began 🥵 I just about managed not to slide off the table during the roll 😂
More oil!!! Arms (again), chest, belly, thighs, calves. At this point, because of the CRAZY amount of oil (we must be well into 2 litres by now) I really am struggling to stop an audible laugh, which resulted in me having what was probably a ridiculous grin on my face just as P starts the chest massage. On his second pass over my side ribs, the slight tickle combined with all my inner thoughts got too much and I actually started laughing out loud. When I opened my eyes I was greeted by P looking at me as if to say "why are you so odd"? I apologised, quickly tried to compose myself, and told him to carry on 😂

India Travel - Abhyanga massage & Shirodhara - part 1 (sorry folks, this is another very long post that has to be split!😂) Internet photos used - due to the level of personal nakedness!
I had to do a post about my Ayurveda treatment experience last night. I wish I was coming on to say what a mind blowingly relaxing and other worldly experience it was, but this is mostly just for the amusement factor 🤣
I wanted to try a Shirodhara treatment (which involves a continuous stream of warm herbal oil poured gently onto the forehead) and the place I booked into had a deal for Shirodhara & Abhyanga massage, so I thought, why not?
I hadn't actually googled what an Abhyanga massage was. I probably should have 😂
You know how in Ireland when you go for a massage, there's a consultation, form filling, and explanations of the treatment beforehand, then lots of body discretion and "towel management" to ensure no body parts are unnecessarily exposed at any point....well (from my experience) it's not like that in India. It's more walk in, get your kit off and get on the bed! Previously I was given a moment of privacy to get undressed, not last night 🤣
(Regardless if how the next bit sounds, I need to clarify that my therapist (Partheeban, P for short) was actually a very nice man and this was not seedy!)
I was guided into the back room and instructed "take your clothes off", so as usual, I stripped down to my pants. P then proceeded to tie a cotton string around my lower abdomen (me thinking, this is new 🤔). Then he tucked one end of a 4" by 3 foot piece of cotton cloth under the string below my belly button, so that the long end fell between my legs to below my knees. P: "take off your pants". Me: "ok", thinking oh this is definitely new! 😬 P: tuck the cloth in at back. Which I did, so essentially I was standing naked (except for the "loin cloth") in what looks like a galvanised shed, with a complete stranger, infront of a massage bed covered in what looks like a plastic tarpaulin. I couldn't help but laugh inside my head.

India Travels - Deviations from the "Typical Day" Part 3:
*Satsangs ("a gathering of people for spiritual or yogic instruction, or for the performance of devotional activities") none so far, but I plan to get to a couple this week.
* 4 trips to the dentist - a consult, root canal treatment, prep for a crown, & then the crown fitting. Dr Madan was amazing through the entire process, couldn't recommend him highly enough!
*Pournami Girivalam - walk around the holy hill on the night of the full moon. 13th January is the full moon and like every other full moon night, hundreds of thousands of people may arrive to do the Girivalam! I did it last year on a full moon night, but it felt more like a festival - the entire route of was lined with market stalls, loud music everywhere, and people were walking much faster than the normal meditative pace. I'll skip it this year!

India Travels, Deviations from the "Typical Day" Part 2:
*Dinner at the Ashram - I wish I had a picture of this to share, but as no photos are allowed, I'll do my best to describe.... dinner is at 7pm, but people have started queueing before 6:45pm. Why? Then I remembered - there are limited seats and once they're gone the remaining people must sit on the floor. This is not a problem, I have good knees 😁 We go through a large empty room (the extension) with pictures of Ramana all over the walls and enter the dining hall, which is a bigger room ("The dining hall and its extension can accommodate nearly 800 people). There are seating benches lining the walls, all of which are occupied. The floor seats are marked with a large banana leaf folded in half, and a cup of water. People around me unfold their leaves and start wetting them with water. I follow suit. I'm not 100% sure if I'm cleaning it or giving it some extra weight so it stays flat 😂 but I do it all the same. A man comes round with a bucket of biriyani rice and spoons out big servings onto each banana leaf. I forget to make a little dip in the rice, so when the next bucket arrives with the curry sauce (gravy as it's called here) & chickpeas, it runs to the edge of my leaf. I quickly try to direct it back to the rice and realise it's roasting hot and a little sore on the fingers. Oh yes, cutlery is not used, you eat with your hand. It's actually quite easy once you get the hang of it. I have to admit though, my trousers didn't escape untouched! 🤣 I'm sure some people will read this and think WTH???? But when do you ever get to do this kind of thing at home! Besides, the food served in the Ashram is probably the best Indian type food in the whole town. It's delicious! Normally meals in the hall are reserved for people staying in the Ashram, but I made a donation and arranged to have a couple of meals there. Can't wait for thr next one!

If you google this, eatin with your hand and eating off banana leaves, are both supposed to have great health benefits!

India Travels - Deviations from the "Typical Day"

India Travels - Deviations from the "Typical Day" Part 1:
*Complete the Girivalam; walk around the holy giri (mountain). The Girivalam is about 14 kms and is supposed to be walked slowly, barefoot, and in a meditative state. It takes about 4-5 hours to complete.
I did it 3 times last year, but not yet on this trip - I'll rectify this soon.
I cycled it on Wednesday morning at 04:15 with Dr Rajan. Night time is best - less traffic & less heat. No matter what time of the day it is, there is always someone making their way round.
*Bhajans in the Ashram. Wednesday evening was my first experience of this and I LOVED it! Kind of like an Irish sing along, except it's devotional songs. It was so uplifting, real food for the soul kind of stuff!
*Night time walk to Skandasramam (where Ramana's mother lived) up by the cave. This morning I met with Sakthi Amma (Dr Rajan's mother) at 05:15 and we set off up the mountain path to the cave for a "mini Girivalam". Amma doesn't speak English, but she has the friendliest eyes I've ever seen in a human! Once we were out the back of the Ashram, we were in darkness, barefoot, and I had to wonder about the health & safety implications 😂 I'm well used to walking up mountains while it's dark, but we use headlamps to light the way - we're not crazy! 😅 As we moved very slowly, I wondered - who's responsible for who here if something goes wrong...I mean, Amma invited me to do this, but she's in her 70's, while I'm not. Anyway, I made the call and turned on the phone torch. Once the path was lit, she practically started running up the hill 🤣🤣🤣 We got to the lookout point in darkness and the lights of the town sprawled out below. We stopped briefly at skandasramam to pay our respects, turned off the torch and we made our way down with the dawn light coming through.
*Motorbike ride to the lake. Once back at Amma's, Rajan offered to take me to see the lake, so I got to see parts of town that I'd never seen before 😊 The lake is completely full right now because of the heavy rain in December. Apparently it's been years since it was at that level. Possibly I'll get to go for a swim here Monday morning🤞

India Travels Part 2
Observations so far:
*The cows are sacred here, so they roam the streets freely. It's not uncommon to see them just standing around, even in the middle of the road.
*The driving is crazy, I can't sit in a car/tuktuk with my eyes open. It feels like everybody is constantly just on the verge of crashing into somebody else. It never happens, but always seems SO close 😂
*There is constant beeping - cars, tuktuks, scooters, bicycles, all beeping. When I was here last year I initially thought it was angry beeping, but it's usually just a notification to a person, or cow (actually, never a cow - they're not expected to move you are!), or dog, or another vechicle to say "hey, I'm coming up behind you, I'm closer, I'm about to pass you, you better move now. 😂 Of course there are some long angry beeps too, when someone has clearly broken the "rules". It's so constant, I barely even notice it anymore 😊
*Beggars are everywhere. It's hard to go more than 30 feet without someone putting our their hand in need. Mostly holy men, who have renounced all material possessions, but also old ladies, young women with babies, or people with physical disabilities. This was a real struggle last year, because obviously you can't give to everybody, but I've gotten better at accepting that it's not my cross to bear, so I give to who I can, and when the daily "donation fund" is gone, that's it - I can't do anymore.
*The Ashram grounds are beautiful - flowers, old trees, peacocks, sleeping dogs, the cow shed, the new hall, the main hall, the meditation room, the shrines; all beautiful & peaceful.
I've included a random selection of photos. None of the Ashram or Cave as no photos are allowed - you'll just have to take my word on how lovely they are 🤷‍♀️

***Long post alert - so long I had to make 2 posts, sorry! 🤣 ***
I arrived in India 8 days ago. I always intended taking some time away from social media to absorb the peace and quiet, and that time has been wonderful, but the messages have started coming in - where are the updates & photos Sorcha? So here goes....
Background - Tiruvannamalai is a town in southern India in the Tamil Nadu region. It's renowned for the holy hill Arunachala, which attracted Ramana Marharshi, who's teachings have continued to attract hundreds of thousands of visitors each year to his Ashram and the area.
Typical day:
05:30: Go to the ashram for morning Parayana (singing of Ramina's teachings in poetic form). It's in Tamil, so not much singing for me, but I join in where I can 😊
07:00: Cross the road to the chai shop for chai or coffee (no sugar, because otherwise it tastes like 5 spoons have gone into each cup 🤣)
07:30: Back to the Ashram for the Vedas (a large body of religious texts), which are chanted. Again, just listening for me 😂.
08:30: I often leave the Vedas early to go to Virupaksha cave which is 1.4 kms up the hill on a paved path at the back of the Ashram. I walk slow (partly due to heat, partly due to being barefoot - Arunachala is considered sacred like a temple). There are so many dogs & monkeys on the route. They're funny, but also cheeky - I have to watch my bag at one particular point 🤣
In the cave it's pure silence & meditation. There's an energy in this cave I can't describe, but it's beautiful, and I love it. I stay for at least 90 minutes.
11:00 - 16:30: life stuff - eat, nap, catch up with family, handwash some clothes, pop into some shops for a nosey, read, get a massage 😊
16:30: similar evening activities start again at the Ashram. I try to spend at least an hour there, but it's much busier in the evening. Often, I'll just go to the meditation hall instead.
Afterwards, maybe some dinner, reading and bed.
